Gulya (Timeform rating 89p)

Runner-up, 1m fillies' novice, Ascot, Wednesday 30 April

Gulya had finished runner-up to a subsequent Group 3 winner at Doncaster on her only outing as a juvenile and she looked unlucky not to make a winning return at Ascot on Wednesday. Gulya took a keen hold under a patient ride and was still going well when looking for room two furlongs out. She was locked up until half a furlong out but came home strongly when finally in the clear and only narrowly failed to get there, missing out by a short head. She is seemingly held in high regard - she was sent off 2/1 t-favourite on debut and holds an entry in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes - and she's a smart prospect.

Shagraan (111)

Third, 5f handicap, Goodwood, Friday 2 May

A lack of numbers but it was still a competitive affair that set up for the closers, and Shagraan, who started favourite, is the horse to take out of the race. He was the only horse in the field without a recent outing and he left the impression he'd come on for his first run in eight months, showing good early speed but picked off in the closing stages by a couple ridden more patiently. Shagraan progressed well last season and still looks a handicapper to keep on the right side, especially if found another opportunity over a sharp five furlongs.

Run Boy Run (103)

Fourth, 6f handicap, Newmarket, Saturday 3 May

The field in this six-furlong handicap raced in one group but the better pace was towards the far side and those drawn high struggled to make an impact. With that in mind, Run Boy Run, who was drawn in stall ten, ran well to be beaten little more than half a length in fourth and can have his effort upgraded slightly. Run Boy Run reared leaving the stalls but soon recovered to race in touch and he briefly fought his way to a share of the lead a couple of furlongs out. He had to settle for minor honours, but he stuck to his task well to make the frame for the third time from as many starts this year and he's a consistent, in-form sprinter who remains on a competitive mark.
