A Grade 1 novice won the last 2 seasons by Gerri Colombe and Inothewayurthinkin, runner-up in and winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following season, the form here looking some way below the level that pair achieved, the race falling apart with 3 of the front 4 in the market effectively out of it at the fourteenth and neither the winner nor the runner-up proven over anything like this far coming in.

CALDWELL POTTER (FR) added a Grade 1 novice to his big handicap win at Cheltenham, stepping up to 3m+ for the first time, not needing to improve any further, though game in victory against another who had his stamina to prove; led, jumped well in main, shaken up 2 out, pressed by runner-up last, battled well; he'll need to progress when taking on the very best next season, though his jumping will stand him in good stead.

JORDANS (FR) made a fight of it with the winner upped to 3m, having been behind for a long way, though whether he bettered his form from his last 2 starts is doubtful; held up, blundered thirteenth, hampered next, headway 3 out, went second next, challenged last, kept on.

QUAI DE BOURBON (FR) again managed to lose his rider, though this time through no fault of his own; patiently ridden, yet to be asked for effort when brought down.
