A good-quality field for this Group 2, plenty of very smart form on offer, though a few in the field have even bigger targets on the horizion, some - among them the second and third - met trouble in a rough race, and others simply weren't on their game, all of which suggests the form on the day probably isn't up to the standard that might've been anticipated beforehand.

PEARL SECRET fitter for comeback, made a belated breakthrough in pattern company, a return to the level of form shown when second to Hot Streak in this race last year good enough, setttling better than is often the case under a jockey whose style suits him and avoiding the trouble that befell the second and third, not that it's cut and dried that they'd have beaten him on a level playing field; held up, went with zest, headway over 1f out, led final 1f, driven out; he ruined his chance in last season's King's Stand by pulling hard, having finished third in it the year before, and this form will need improving on if he's to be more than a place contender there this time around.

JACK DEXTER back down in trip, confirmed return to form and looked unlucky not to finish closer, though whether the interference he met cost him the race is open to debate, having to barge through up the stand rail but never really stopped in his tracks, either way clearly near enough as good as ever; dropped out, headway when not clear run over 1f out, chased leader inside final 1f, finished strongly.

WIND FIRE (USA) hasn't looked up to this level previously but produced a career best with her reappearance behind her and was unlucky not to finish closer still, caught with nowhere to go when others were building up a head of steam; in touch, shuffled back 2f out, not clear run approaching final 1f, finished well.

DANZENO most progressive last season, shaped as if retaining all ability after 8 months off, having no problem with the trip on his first try at 5f and likely to be sharper for the run, one of just three reappearers in the field; chased leaders, led under pressure over 1f out, headed final 1f, one paced; he's a serious contender for races at this level with this behind him.

JUSTICE DAY (IRE) back down in trip, ran better than last time but still below his best, as much as anything not up to the task; handy, effort 2f out, not quicken.

HOT STREAK (IRE) who won this race last year, was well backed to repeat the trick but underperformed and hasn't made up into the high-classs sprinter that last season's success suggested he would; slowly into stride, mid-division, pushed along 2f out, close up approaching final 1f, not quicken.

GOLDREAM failed by a long chalk to repeat his Palace House form, an unusually subdued effort on his part, maybe taking more out of himself at Newmarket than seemed likely at the time; prominent, led 2f out, headed approaching final 1f, weakened late on; he'll surely bounce back.

G FORCE (IRE) established his top-level credentials when winning the Sprint Cup here last autumn and it's easy to put a line through this return from 7 months off, almost certainly needing the run for one thing (easy to back conceding weight all around) but more to the point one of the worst sufferers in a rough race; held up, not clear run over 2f out, ridden when badly hampered approaching final 1f, stumbled, not recover; he's in both the King's Stand and the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot and remains a serious contender for both, still the highest rated of this bunch.

KINGSGATE NATIVE (IRE) winner of this in 2010 and 2013, didn't have much of a race this time around, never seeing much daylight; held up, not clear run 2f out, never involved.

TAKE COVER a winner at this level at Goodwood last summer, might have needed run after 8 months off but ended up a fair way below form, a much lesser effort than any he managed in 2014; led until 2f out, weakened final 1f.

GREAT MINDS (IRE) was well held away from softish ground for the first time, probably already in trouble by the time interference finished him off; held up, ridden over 2f out, hampered over 1f out, lost place soon after.
